Feel good story of the day.

(Sky News) — US missiles have killed 10 militants, including a commander in the al-Qaeda-linked Haqqani network that the American military has linked to Pakistani intelligence, officials said.

US drones hovering over Pakistan’s border areas with Afghanistan fired the salvo of missiles on the day that American envoy Marc Grossman held talks with Pakistani leaders on strengthening their fragile alliance in the war on terror.

Early on Thursday, two missiles slammed into a compound in Dandey Darpakhel village, about 7km north of Miranshah, the main town in North Waziristan tribal district.

‘Jamil Haqqani, an important Afghan commander of Haqqani network was the target and was killed,’ a Pakistani security official told AFP on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to talk to the media.

A Pakistani intelligence official confirmed the killing and said Jamil was working as a coordinator of the Haqqani network in North Waziristan.

The official said the three other people killed in the strike were Haqqani’s fighters, guarding the commander in the compound.

Update: Sweet.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A senior American official is confirming the death of a top leader in the Haqqani network who played a central role in attacking coalition forces in Afghanistan.

Janbaz Zadran was killed Thursday in the Haqqani stronghold of Miram Shah in North Waziristan, Pakistan. The area has been targeted in CIA drone strikes in the past.

The U.S. official says Zadran’s death makes him the most senior Haqqani leader in Pakistan to be taken off the battlefield. The official says Zadran helped the Haqqani network orchestrate attacks on troops in Kabul and southeastern Afghanistan. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters.

U.S. intelligence considers the Haqqani Network the No. 1 threat in Afghanistan and is supported by Pakistani security forces.
