Although Waters would have preferred “even bigger plans.”
(Politico 44) — Rep. Maxine Waters has been critical of President Obama’s job-creation efforts, but she had a positive first reaction to his speech Thursday night.
“I think he got it right,” the California Democrat said on a CBS News webcast shortly after Obama finished his address to Congress.
Waters, who has generally been an Obama ally, let her frustration with his relationship with black Americans show last month at a Congressional Black Caucus town hall and in subsequent appearances and interviews.
Waters issued a statement Thursday morning challenging Obama to focus not only on the “people of Iowa” but “the unemployed in the African-American community, including almost 45 percent of its youth.”
Obama, Waters said after the speech, offered a “big plan,” though she said she “would have had even bigger plans.”
