Well done.

(JPost) — Australia on Tuesday joined the growing ranks of Western nations that have decided to boycott the so-called Durban III conference set to take place at the United Nations headquarters next month.

Canberra announced it would not take part in the tenth anniversary commemoration of the Durban World Conference on Racism citing concern it would be exploited by Israel’s foes and focus unfairly on the Jewish State.

“Australia remained involved in the early stages of consultation on the High Level meeting in order to oppose attempts to endorse extreme language or explicit references to the text of the Durban Declaration,” a spokesperson for Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard said. “But we have not been convinced that the High Level Meeting will avoid unbalanced criticism of Israel and the airing of anti-Semitic views.

So far six countries — the US, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic and Israel — have said they would not partake in the event named after the original 2001 gathering in South Africa. That conference was heavily criticized by Israel and the U.S. for focusing on the Jewish State. A subsequent conference dubbed Durban II which took place in Switzerland in 2009 was boycotted by a coalition of Western Nations and included a large walkout during a speech delivered by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The American Jewish Committee on Tuesday lauded the decision and called on other nations to follow suit.
