Feel good story of the day.

Miramshah, 10 August (AKI/DAWN) — A suspected US drone strike in Pakistan’s northwestern tribal belt along the Afghan border on Wednesday killed at least 18 people, DawnNews reported.

The casualties occurred when the drone fired two missiles, destroying a vehicle and a compound near Miramshah, the main town in the restive North Waziristan tribal area.

The US strikes are deeply unpopular among the Pakistani public, who see foreign military action on Pakistani soil as a violation of national sovereignty.

Pakistan has officially protested to the United States that the strikes violate its sovereignty, although some officials have said there is a tacit understanding between the two militaries allowing such action.

The drone attacks, a supposedly “secret” programme started by the CIA in 2004, have been ramped up over the past three years, with a record 118 strikes last year and over 50 so far in 2011.
