(ABC News) — President Obama lunched at a Capitol Hill burger joint today with six lucky volunteer organizers from across the country who won an essay contest run by his re-election campaign.

The volunteers, among 1,600 participants in the campaign’s Summer Organizer program, wrote on why they organize in their communities and what they learned this summer, a campaign official told ABC News. The essays were read by peers and staff anonymously, and six authors were selected for the all-expenses-paid trip to Washington to dine with Obama.

“What was wonderful was all the different stories that you guys represented,” the president said as the group sat down to lunch. “It was really good stuff.”

The winners include Oscar De Los Santos, 17, of Porter Ranch, Calif.; Nora Fee, 18, of Portland, Ore.; Victoria Kirby, 24, of Suitland, Md.; Celeste Rotunda, 20, of Gainesville, Fla.; and, Henry Shah, 16, of Philadelphia, Pa.

Kathleen McKevitt, 67, a former international marketing manager for GE turned freelance photojournalist and consultant, also attended the lunch as a summer organizer from Idaho, where she has been an active Obama supporter since the 2008 presidential campaign.

“It is exciting to again step into an opportunity with the Democratic Party, where people breathe the same desire to give back, to absorb the President’s goals and energy and share that with voting citizens,” McKevitt said in a statement on the state Democratic Party website.
