(Ballot Box) — Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum said Attorney General Eric Holder has to be high to want to try terrorists in civilian courts.

“He must be under some influence because he certainly isn’t thinking clearly,” Santorum said Tuesday.

Santorum was explaining a comment he made during a campaign stop Monday in Iowa.

“Maybe he is eating mushrooms,” he said.

Santorum said he was responding to Holder’s recent characterization of the civilian court system as the United States’ best tool against terrorism.

“That’s just counter to any reality that I’m aware of,” Santorum said.

Last week, Holder defended his methodology toward terrorist trials, calling the court system “our most effective terror-fighting weapon.” The remarks took place at the American Constitution Society convention.

“[It] is remarkable that the attorney general of the United States would say the greatest tool we have against those who break every conceivable law known to man to do destruction on society, the greatest tool we have is to give them constitutional rights that every man and woman in America have, provide them all the legal protection they can possibly have in order to be able to investigate them,” Santorum said on Fox News.
