(USA Today) — House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said today that Democrats should strip embattled Rep. Anthony Weiner of his committee assignments if the New York congressman doesn’t leave.

Cantor, R-Va., has called for Weiner to resign after the Democrat admitted last week he sent a lewd photo of himself in his underwear to a young woman and had inappropriate relationships on Twitter and Facebook.

Weiner said Saturday he’ll seek a leave of absence and go into a treatment facility. But the lawmaker has ignored calls by top leaders of his own party — including Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and national chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz — to leave immediately.

“I think this kind of behavior is unacceptable,” Cantor told reporters. “I’m hoping that they (Democrats) will begin to move, if he doesn’t resign, toward things like perhaps stripping him of his committees.”

Earlier, White House spokesman Jay Carney said President Obama believes Weiner has become a “distraction” for the party. USA TODAY’s David Jackson has more in The Oval.
