(Daily Mail) — British taxpayers are paying for a French Muslim couple to challenge their country’s controversial burkha ban.

The unnamed husband and wife claim they were forced to move to Britain after the introduction of the law banning the burkha in public.

And they are using the freely accessible Britain’s Immigration Advisory Service, which receives £15 million a year in taxpayers’ cash, to try and overturn the law at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

They are claiming for £10,000 damages because they say the ‘unnecessary, disproportionate and unlawful’ ban breaches their right to free movement across the European Union.

Top immigration and public law barrister Ramby de Mello has been instructed by their Birmingham-based solicitor Robina Shah to fight the case of the West Midlands couple.

Ms Shah, who said the couple have two daughters and want to remain anonymous in case they suffer hostility, told the Daily Express: ‘The case clearly is of importance to my clients.

‘As a result of the ban they have had to leave their country of nationality, as the ban restricts their freedom of choice, and that of their daughters.’

The couple’s case documents said they wanted to live and work in France but the ban had made it impossible.
