INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Indiana state Rep. Bruce Borders says he won’t introduce legislation that would deny recognition of the Islamic legal system Sharia in the state.
Borders says he had previously discussed a possible bill to exclude consideration of foreign laws with The Tribune-Star of Terre Haute. But Borders says he’s talked to a leading Muslim advocacy group and says he will not introduce the proposal.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations says such proposals are “fear-mongering” attacks on Islam and are redundant because current law ensures the supremacy of federal and state laws.
