Mayor Bill de Blasio defended not having final teacher staffing numbers Friday in a testy exchange with WNYC radio host Brian Lehrer.

Lehrer asked de Blasio exactly how many educators the city still needed to hire to fully staff both remote and in-person classes next week.

“When we have everyone assigned, every seat filled, we’ll announce that number,” de Blasio said while insisting that all needs would be met.

Lehrer then asked de Blasio if the city could face another reopening delay due to staffing uncertainties.

“There’s no reason to delay,” de Blasio said. “I’m monitoring this constantly.”

When Lehrer continued to press the question, an irritated de Blasio called the inquiry pointless.

“I don’t do hypotheticals because we are dealing with the health care dynamics and everything else,” he said. “I’m not going to do that and honestly I don’t think that’s productive.”
