Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz signaled a rare break with President Donald Trump on Wednesday, saying he would not support Trump’s plan to close the southern border.
Cruz said in a statement that while he supports the White House’s initiatives on border security, he is worried about the economic impact such a drastic move would have.
“Closing the border to legal commerce would be devastating to Texas,” Cruz said. “Millions of jobs in Texas and across the country, depend upon trade with Mexico, and the Federal Government shouldn’t do anything to jeopardize those jobs. ”
Cruz also went on to slam Democrats for the party’s refusal to negotiate with Trump on border security. (RELATED: Pelosi Rejects Trump’s DACA For Border Wall Funding Proposal)
“Human traffickers, drug traffickers, and criminal cartels are responsible for suffering and misery and death,” Cruz said. “And Democratic obstructionism — fueled by a partisan hatred for President Trump — has blocked Congress from fixing the problem.”
