A Sullivan County sheriff’s deputy is in serious condition following a Saturday morning shooting.
Sheriff Jeff Cassidy says Deputy Steve Hinkle was shot while responding to a check welfare call off 11W in Blountville.
At some point during the call, according to the sheriff, gunfire was exchanged and Hinkle was shot.
Hinkle was taken to a local hospital where he remains in serious condition.
The suspect, identified as Jackie Scott Pendergrass, was found dead according to the sheriff.
