An old video from 1988 reportedly pushed out by a leader of “Draft Beto 2020” appears to show then-Burlington Mayor Bernie Sanders shirtless and singing on his jokingly labeled “honeymoon” with Jane to the USSR.
The bizarre video — a recording of footage from the “Burlington Soviet Trip” to Yaroslavl, Burlington’s sister city, dated June 13, 1988 — shows Sanders and Jane at a table loaded with drinks. Like a few other men at the table, Bernie is shirtless. The group eventually joins together in singing Woodie Guthrie’s classic “This Land Is Your Land.”
In his tweet pushing the video, Travis Justin, whom the left-leaning publication Forward describes as a “Bernie detractor,” Navy veteran, and “leader of ‘Draft Beto 2020,'” writes in the caption: “Recently discovered footage from 1988 reveals a shirtless Bernie Sanders with his wife, Jane, on their honeymoon in the USSR, drunkenly singing ‘This Land Is Your Land’ with a group of presumed Soviets.”
