Here’s the CNN report:

So naturally, CNN’s story is not quite right.

In the story, it has him saying it two times.

In the accompanying video in which they have a chyron declaring him a Vietnam Vet, he actually says “Vietnam-times” vet one of the times. They do have him saying it a second time in the story but no video to clarify that.

The WaPo has now “clarified” their own report saying he was a Vietnam veteran. They were the first report on the story. Many other media outlets also reported he was a Vietnam vet erroneously.

Correction: Earlier versions of this story incorrectly said that Native American activist Nathan Phillips fought in the Vietnam War. Phillips served in the U.S. Marines from 1972 to 1976 but was never deployed to Vietnam.

The problem with claiming one was a “Vietnam-times” veteran is it is suggestive of a fact that is not quite true, that one served in Vietnam.
