During an interview this week, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appeared to blame his country’s migration crisis on the policies of its southern neighbor, the United States.
The unexpected jab at U.S. President Donald Trump occurred after an interviewer with the Global News asked the prime minister whether his overly welcoming attitude toward migrants was to blame for the growing crisis along Canada’s southern border.
“Your tweet saying ‘welcome to Canada’ is often cited as the reason why these people are pouring across the border. Do you ever regret that tweet?” interviewer Amanda Connolly asked.
Trudeau posted the tweet around the same time that Trump signed an executive order banning immigration from terrorism-prone nations.
In response to Connolly’s question, Trudeau said no.
“If people are in the midst of migration around the world right now, it’s not because of a tweet restating — almost word for word — Canadian policy on refugees, because that’s exactly what it was,” he claimed.
Available for review here, Canada’s refugee policy neither mentions “diversity” nor contains the words “welcome to Canada.”
“And certainly, if people are fleeing the United States right now and are choosing to leave the United States right now, it’s not something I said,” he added. “It is perhaps domestic realities within the political context in the United States that is driving people to move or to make those certain decisions.”
