The migrant caravan of thousands of Central Americans has paused out of respect for a man who died on Monday after falling from an overloaded truck in southern Mexico, marking the first death since the group of more than 7,000 set off on their march towards the US.

The man, who has not been named, died in Tapachula, Mexico, on Monday after hitching a ride on a truck with countless others who have been walking for more than 10 days.

He fell onto the highway and was seen lying under a sheet until his body was removed afterwards. It is not known if he died by hitting his head on impact or if he was struck by another vehicle.

Police in Tapacula have warned residents, who poured into the streets to offer the Honduran and Guatemalan migrants water and supplies, not to let too many ride on their vehicles because it is so dangerous.

Their advice was largely ignored on Monday as some members of the caravan hopped onto the sides of vans, trucks and cars to give their tired feet a rest.

On Monday, as the group took repose, medical vans rushed into Huixtla to examine some of the thousands of children who have been brought along for the journey.
