Parents are calling for an elementary school principal to be fired after she called former NFL star and activist Colin Kaepernick a ‘thug’ in a Facebook post many have deemed racist.
In a recent post, Roni Burns-Ellis fumed about Nike’s controversial 30th anniversary campaign featuring the 30-year-old athlete writing that she would no longer support the company.
Posting a photo of a cut-up Nike’s shirt, Burns-Ellis, wrote: ‘My newest rag! When Nike signs an anti-American thug to represent their brand, I will not support, wear, purchase or endorse their product. Bye-bye Nike.’
The message was posted on Burns-Ellis’ personal Facebook page and quickly caught the attention of outraged parents who started a petition calling for J.H. McGaugh Elementary School in Seal Beach to fire the principal.
‘As our country has become divided and name calling and hate has become normalized, we were particularly disheartened by her comment on Facebook yesterday,’ the petition read. ‘We may disagree but we hope our Los Alamitos School leaders will always act civilly, treat each other with respect, and not engage in name calling. Our children view the teachers and principals as a beacon of moral character.’
We hope our school leaders will act responsibly and will walk with kindness as they lead our children with their actions,’ it continued.
More than 2,300 people have signed the petition since it was launched on Tuesday, and the comments section was filled with messages from parents lashing out at Burns-Ellis.
One parent wrote that the principal’s Facebook post made it obvious that she has ‘racist views on blacks’ because she referred to Kaepernick, who is black, as a thug.
‘He is no gangster, criminal or for that matter a thug,’ the parent wrote. ‘Leaders who teach children to stereotype any group, as this principal has done, has no business leading our teachers, community and especially our children. I implore our school board to release Ms Burns-Ellis of her duties immediately. She is unfit to lead, period.’
