There could be a big fight brewing in Little Egg Harbor, where a Democrat on the township committee has officially threatened to sue a Republican colleague for $1 million, claiming he was called ‘baldilocks,’ and other bad names — behind his back but on tape — on several occasions including a public meeting last spring.
“Verbal assault during a Twp meeting while on the dais,” reads the complaint by Township Committeeman David Schlick, in a notice of tort claims form submitted to the Little Egg Harbor township clerk. “Slanders as well as name calling. I was not in attendance. The damages to my political career are impossible to repair. Harassment on many occa[sions].”
The allegations by Schlick, a Democrat, are against GOP Committeeman John Kehm, and involve remarks that Schlick says were made by Kehm on various occasions, including during a committee meeting on April 12 in the township, which is home to more than 20,000 people on the southern tip of Ocean County.
“Harassment — bullying — many occasions of making fun of the way I look, the way I walk, what I wear,” Schlick wrote in the notice. “Some inappropriate comments about my fiance as well as my daughter. Name calling — called me a midget, called me Baldilocks. Tells me I have bad breathe. Makes fun of me for going gray, calls me an old man. It goes on and on. It is never ending. It has created a hostile work environment. [Township Attorney Jean] Cipriani has witnessed some of it and has allegedly warned him. To no avail.”
The May 17 tort claim notice, an official warning to a public official or agency that must be filed six month ahead of a lawsuit, was previously reported by PoliticsOC.com.
Schlick, the only Democrat on the 5-member committee, said the name-calling was a politically motivated attempt to intimidate following his opposition to several moves by the GOP majority. Schlick, 50, a lifelong Democrat who moved to Little Egg Harbor at age 5, won his first 3-year term in November 2015 and is up for re-election this year.[…]
Schlick’s own running mate in 2015, Committeewoman Lisa Stevens, switched from Democrat to Republican last year.
