The White House announced on Thursday that they will be hosting a “Salute to the Heroes of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs Border Protection” event.
The event is scheduled to take place on August 20 in the East Room in the White House.
This comes after several Democratic candidates and elected officials called for the abolition of ICE, including congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI), Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA), and Rep. Nydia Veláquez (D-NY), among others.
