Democratic billionaire activist Tom Steyer Monday announced he’ll invest $10 million in a new national get-out-the-vote campaign aimed at reaching 5.5 million Americans who have signed his petition to impeach President Donald Trump.
“We’re in a fight to save the soul of America, so we’re not going to turn our eyes away from the most important truth in our country … which is that the president has no respect for our country, no respect for the Constitution and no respect for the American people,“ Steyer said Monday at an event in Lansing, Michigan, that was webcast live. “The biggest task in this country today is to return power to the American people.”
Steyer — whose Need to Impeach petition drive founded last October has collected 5.5 million signatures — said he will invest $10 million “to contact every single one of our supporters and encourage them to cast a ballot.“
The success of such personalized outreach voter efforts has already been proven in 2018, Steyer said. He told supporters that in the recent Ohio congressional District 12 House race, “our members turned out at a rate 30 percent higher than Dems that didn’t sign the petition.” In that race alone, he said, “’Need to Impeach’ contributed to a near-death experience for the GOP in a seat they held for over 35 years.“
Steyer said he’s now upping his investment because he believes that impact can be multiplied.
“We have 10,000 supporters in the most competitive House districts,“ he said. “If our movement does show up in November, we can change who controls the House.”
