A Washington, D.C. restaurant intent on stimulating conversations about race among its patrons elicited harsh criticism from Black Lives Matter, which claims that the restaurant’s owner tried to “commoditize radical history.”
Andy Shallal, owner of Busboys & Poets, which is comprised of a restaurant, bookstore, lounge, and theater, was reportedly disturbed by the incident at a Philadelphia Starbucks in which two black men were arrested for trespassing, decided to address the issue by having “employees gather around a table at one of Shallal’s six restaurants to discuss their fears, their pasts and their experiences with race,” according to The Washington Post.
