Managers at CrossRoads Pawn and Audio call their sign that reads “We sell AR-15’s because we’re not Dick’s” clever advertising.

“It was a simple marketing idea is all it was,” said Barbara Davey, a manager at the pawn shop.

But others call the sign gross, disgusting and insensitive.

“I think it’s very offensive,” said Ernest Carson, a Socastee resident.

Either way, CrossRoads has seen more business since putting up the sign.

“We have a few people, you know, who weren’t in favor of the sign but our positive feedback really outweighed that negative feedback,” said Davey.

The pawn shop is just down the road from North Myrtle Beach High School and the sign was put up shortly before Friday’s deadly shooting at a Santa Fe, Texas, high school.

“I think they are upset because we are, you know, in a somewhat close proximity to the high school. But in no way do we advocate or support the tragedies that are going on in this country,” said Davey.

She says the sign was put up to stand up for the Second Amendment, not as a response to recent high school shootings.

“We want to be able to help the community keep their families safe, to keep themselves safe, to advocate, you know, responsible gun ownership,” said Davey.

But Carson says the AR-15 does not fit that.

“I disagree totally with the AR-15. It’s a combat weapon and it should be used for combat and combat only,” he said.
