An ATF agent was shot and critically injured early Friday while working undercover in a joint mission with Chicago police task force officers on the South Side, Chicago police said.
The shooting happened around 3:15 a.m. in the 4500 block of South Hermitage Avenue in the Back of the Yards neighborhood.
The agent was rushed to Stroger Hospital where he was in critical condition.
No one is in custody.
Luz Campos, who lives several houses down from the shooting, was in her kitchen tending to a toddler when she heard someone say: “Open the door. Open the door.”
After that, she heard what at the time she thought were fireworks.
“Then the cops were coming,” she said.
Other residents of the neighborhood reported hearing a barrage of gunshots. One woman said they were too numerous to count.
