An immigration detainee who escaped custody in New York City has been arrested in Chicago, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Mohamadou Lamine Mbacke, 31, was in custody Tuesday night and awaiting a flight to Senegal when he fled the JFK airport in a taxi, WPIX reports. Port Authority police confirmed the man was seen on surveillance video getting into a taxi.
Mbacke is currently in custody. He was taken into custody without incident at a coffee shop near the downtown Chicago Amtrak station, according to a statement from ICE.
Zimbo Gessert was behind the register when Mbacke walked into the Starbucks on Adams and Clinton around 1 p.m.
“We just gave him the blonde roast he goes off into the corner,” Gessert told WGN. “And he’s just kind of looking out the window like most customers. They just watch the streets go by.”
Gessert says Mbacke was only sitting there for a few minutes when two men walked in and went right up to him.
“I thought it was just like three guys meeting up. It was kind of quiet we didn’t hear anything and all of a sudden I see seven cops coming from the outside to the inside to apprehend him.”
