Border Patrol agents based in Vermont caught 11 Europeans attempting to illegally enter the U.S. from Canada over the weekend, according to a statement U.S. Customs and Border Protection issued Tuesday.
Early Saturday morning, Swanton Border Patrol Sector video cameras caught two vehicles carrying seven Romanian citizens and four French citizens as they drove over the international border and hopped the sidewalk by the Haskell Free Library, which is located right on the boundary line.
The cars then circled around to the southbound lanes of Interstate 91. About five miles south of the border, the cars exited the highway and were stopped by Border Patrol in Newport, Vt., CBP reported.
Two French adults, two French children, four Romanian adults, and three Romanian kids were found and taken into custody after failing to produce any documents that allowed them to be in the U.S.
The 11 people were turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Office of Enforcement and Removal Operations, where they await removal proceedings.
