More than 40 people were arrested in Austin as part of a federal immigration operation targeting undocumented immigrants with criminal histories in South and Central Texas in mid-February.
According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, authorities arrested 145 people in Austin, San Antonio, the Rio Grande Valley, Laredo and Waco over a seven-day period ending on Feb. 16.
ICE said most of the people they targeted during the operation had criminal histories, and some had been convicted for crimes including indecency with a child, assault, drug trafficking, alien smuggling, illegally entering the U.S., driving under the influence, drug possession and others.
“Of the 145 arrested, 86 had criminal convictions; 39 were arrested based on previous immigration encounters, four of which have pending criminal charges; 20 had no prior immigration history or encounters, one has pending criminal charges. Of the total arrests 135 were men and 10 were women. They range in age from 18 to 62 years old,” the agency said.[…]
ICE said 128 of those arrested were from Mexico, seven were from Guatemala, seven were from Honduras and one came from El Salvador, Peru and Jordan, respectively.
The Mexican Consulate in Austin issued a statement on Tuesday saying it received notification of the arrest of 11 people of Mexican nationality on Feb. 16, seven of whom requested consular assistance.
