Kentucky State Police have apologized for a Super Bowl-themed tweet that joked about prison rape in an attempt to discourage drunk drivers.

The state police account tweeted: ‘Enjoy watching Rob Gronkowski (TE) play but if you drink & drive … your tight-end may end up in jail!’ Sunday night to its more than 50,000 followers.

Accompanying the distasteful post was a gif of a bar of soap tied to a rope and being dropped. The implication is ‘don’t drop the soap,’ which is a crude reference to a male inmate making himself vulnerable to anal rape.

Gronkowski plays tight-end for the New England Patriots, who eventually lost to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The tweet, which remained up for nearly two hours, quickly drew condemnation from Kentucky’s Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes.
