Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas hit back against President Donald Trump’s commitment to provide roughly 800,000 illegal immigrants a pathway to citizenship, calling the president’s move “inconsistent” with the Republican’s immigration platform.

“I do not believe we should be granting a path to citizenship to anybody here illegally,” Cruz said Thursday at the Capitol. “Doing so is inconsistent with the promises we made to the men and women who elected us.”

While Cruz did not use Trump’s name, his comment Thursday comes under 24 hours after the president told reporters he is considering a 10-12 year pathway to citizenship for the roughly 800,000 recipients of the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
