America is one of the few countries in the world where you can buy property without being a citizen. Everywhere else, the decision is reviewed.

New Zealand officials are reviewing disgraced US TV host Matt Lauer’s purchase of a large South Island farm.

Mr Lauer was fired from his role on the Today show after he was accused of inappropriate sexual behaviour.

In February he was given approval to purchase the lease for the Hunter Valley Station – however only foreigners with “good character” are allowed to buy.

“The Overseas Investment Office is aware that allegations have been made in relation to Matt Lauer and that he is no longer working for NBC News in the USA,” says Lisa Barrett, deputy chief executive of Policy and Overseas Investment, told media.

“We are discussing this with his representative and are seeking further information.

“A condition of the consent granted to Orange Lakes Ltd to purchase the lease for Hunter Valley Station is that the individuals with control of that company must continue to be of good character.”
