Congress must consider making Puerto Rico America’s 51st state after island residents who showed up at the polls Sunday voted overwhelmingly for statehood, the White House said.
“Now that the people have spoken in Puerto Rico, this is something Congress has to address,” Sean Spicer, President Trump’s spokesman, said during a Monday press briefing.
“The process has to work its way through Congress.”
Spicer did not say whether the president supports statehood for the financially-strapped US territory, whose spending is now monitored by a financial control board.
