A man who drove a car into a group of people on a city square, injuring three, has been shot by police.

The man hit the pedestrians in the city of Heidelberg, south-west Germany, then fled before being tracked down by officers.

Video footage shows there was a short standoff before the man was shot by police and taken to hospital.

Police spokeswoman Anne Baas said one of the three hit outside the bakery was seriously injured.

The man got out of his vehicle with a knife, a police spokesman said. An officer could be heard shouting ‘knife gone’ after he was shot, according to local media reports.
