Upending the Obama ‘catch and release.’
Via NY Post:
President Trump continued to roll back the Obama administration’s immigration policy, with the Department of Homeland Security issuing two new memos Tuesday.
The memos end Obama’s policy of “catch and release” of immigrants crossing illegally into the US, saying that the feds should “use our detention authority to detain folks.”
The new rules also call for Customs and Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to remove illegal immigrants they encounter — with a special emphasis on removing those who have committed additional crimes while in the US.
“Department personnel have full authority to arrest or apprehend an alien whom an immigration officers has probable cause to believe is in violation of the immigration laws,” one document states.
“They also have full authority to initiate removal proceedings against any alien who is subject to removal under any provision of the (Immigration and Nationality Act),” it adds.
