In a new photo report purportedly released by the Islamic State, ISIS photogs document the recent retaking of the ancient city of Palmyra by showing the corpses of the defeated Syrian Arab Army and their supporters. The photo report was released on ISIS terrorist channels on December 12. An accompanying summary of the report reads: “Aspects of Taking Control over the City of #Tadmur.” Tadmur is the modern city about a 1/3 of a mile away from the Palmyra ruins.
Yesterday it was reported that ISIS had recaptured Palmyra after losing it nine months ago. According to The Los Angeles Times, “A statement released by Islamic State on social media Sunday said the ‘soldiers of the caliphate had secured their control over all of Palmyra city… after three days of violent clashes.'” Above, a battle rages with buildings in the background. According to the BBC, “Activists in [Palmyra] said militants were going door to door looking for any remaining forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad.” Later in this photo report, men allegedly loyal to Assad are shown rounded up and beheaded with their decapitated heads placed on spikes.
While nearly all of the extremist organizations in Syria are Sunni, the Syrian government is run by Bashar al-Assad, an Alawite or “Nusayri Shia.” According to The Believe Project, Nusayri Shia doctrine developed in the mountains of Syria in the 9th century by Abu Shu’ayb Muhammad ibn Nusayr. ISIS derives its propagandistic name for the Assad from Nusayr as “Nusayris.” However, the term in modern times has come to be viewed as derogatory. Above, one of the “loyalists” is shown with his decapitated head on a spike.
