BAGHDAD — Iraq’s top Shi’ite Muslim cleric has declared chess and every kind of computer games as forbidden according to the Islamic rules.

Responding to questions from his followers, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani said that chess and computer games are proscribed for Muslims regardless of playing them for entertainment or gambling.

He also announced card games as forbidden.

Sistani is the highest religious cleric among the Shi’ite Muslims, and his fatwas (religious order) are accepted by many followers of the religion.
