Moving quickly and employing a massive manhunt, Detroit and Wayne State police arrested a person of interest in the shooting of an on-duty K-9 police officer who was shot in the head Tuesday evening, according to Detroit police.

The arrest came about 10 p.m., police said, about three hours after the off-campus shooting about 7 p.m. near Lincoln and Brainard of WSU K-9 Officer Collin Rose. The shooting is the first such grave injury to a campus officer in the department’s history, WSU police chief Anthony Holt said.

WSU President M. Roy Wilson told reporters late Tuesday that Rose, 29, was out of surgery and “in recovery now.”

“He’s got a tough road to climb but we’ll just have to see what happens,” Wilson said outside Detroit Receiving Hospital, where the officer remained in critical condition.

Detroit Police James Craig called the officer well-respected.

Deangelo Davis, described by police as a person of interest, was taken into custody after a “massive manhunt.” It was unclear where the man was found Tuesday night. Craig said Davis had outstanding misdemeanor warrants.
