Obama says “Unfortunately here in America there is a tradition of making it hard for people to vote. Historically it was done purposely, to keep African Americans from voting. And that tradition has sometimes carried over.”

Oh really, Mr. President? Please tell me any place that black people are prevented from voting? Voter ID is encouraged by people all over the world who want to protect the sanctity of their elections, including by Nelson Mandela. To assume, or to claim asking for voter ID is to hard a process for black people to comply with, is in and of itself, racist.

The questioner, Gina Rodriguez, asks him about non-citizens voting. She makes it clear she is talking about non-citizens voting:

Many of the millennial, DREAMers, undocumented citizens, and I call them citizens because they contribute to this country, are fearful of voting, so if I vote, will immigration know where I live? Will they come for my family and deport us?”

There is no question she is asking about illegal aliens voting.

Not only does he not say that is wrong, he seems to encourage such voting, although he does also use the term ‘citizen’ but it’s not clear how that is meant given Rodriguez just ‘redefined it’.

Obama responds:

“Not true. First of all, when you vote, you are a citizen yourself, and there is not a situation where the voting rolls are transferred over and people start investigating, etcetera. The sanctity of the vote is strictly confidential in terms of who you voted for. If you have a family member who maybe is undocumented, you have an even greater reason to vote…The reason fear is promoted is because they don’t want people voting. People are discouraged from voting”.
