George Soros has sunk an astonishing $2.3 million into a campaign aimed at defeating Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, according to campaign-finance report filed Friday.
In all, Soros’ independent campaign, Maricopa Strong, has spent $3.2 million on ads attacking the six-term sheriff. Texas billionaire John Arnold has kicked in $500,000 and Laurene Powell Jobs of California, widow of Steve Jobs, another $250,000.
Soros also has taken aim at Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery, funding an independent campaign called Arizona Safety & Justice, which has spent $1.4 million to bounce him out of office, new records show.
Both Montgomery and Arpaio have decried Soros’ spending and filed campaign finance complaints, contending they weren’t properly notified about campaign ads. A Soros spokeswoman has denied that, providing copies of notifications to a reporter.
One complaint Arpaio and Montgomery can’t make: that “dark money” forces are attacking them. In fact, Soros’ campaign spending in Arizona has been fully disclosed.
Arpaio, of course, is outraged that, as his campaign guru Chad Willems put it, a “far-left globalist like George Soros is trying to buy a Sheriff’s Office here in Maricopa County.”[…]
It’s difficult to see Arpaio gliding to another glorious victory next week, given that you needed a microscope to see his last win in 2012.
