A strong minority of voters believe that the re-opened FBI investigation into Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and her emails will damage her chances against Republican nominee Donald Trump, according to a Sunday CBS News poll.
Forty-Eight percent of voters believe the investigation will reveal “damaging information” about Clinton, but 71 percent of Democrats reported the latest announcement won’t change their impression of the Democratic nominee.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation announced Friday it was re-opening its investigation into Clinton’s private email server after a separate inquiry revealed the FBI was not given all of the emails Clinton sent or received during her tenure as secretary of state.
Only 5 percent of Democrats think that the most recent investigation could be damaging, but 33 percent of Clinton supporters believe the investigation looks bad for Clinton.
52 percent of all likely voters in key battleground states like Florida and Pennsylvania believe that the emails will provide nothing new to the public discussion on Clinton’s email server.
Interestingly, Democratic voters appear fatigued by the email issue, possibly because little over a third in every battleground state polled reported they didn’t feel Clinton was “honest and trustworthy.”
While emails and investigations may fall short of any terminal impact on her campaign, voter enthusiasm could be a factor for Clinton. Forty percent of Clinton supporters are unenthusiastic about their candidate in Colorado, compared to 56 percent who are enthusiastic in supporting Trump.
