Milling around outside a shipping container in a gated compound of the notorious Jungle camp in Calais, here is the latest wave of migrants hoping to escape the chaos for a new life in Britain.

This is the first picture of the makeshift facility being used by Home Office officials to establish the age and eligibility of migrants.

Their desperation to come to the UK has heightened with the clearance of the sprawling camp, which is due to start tomorrow.

Migrants already admitted to the UK have come under intense scrutiny, with pictures showing males who appear to be far older than 18. And those queueing to be interviewed yesterday did not appear to be much younger.

The vetting process is taking place amid an increasingly desperate atmosphere in Calais. Last night, police were forced to use smoke grenades to disperse crowds of migrants throwing rocks at them.

As darkness fell, hundreds of jeering migrants lined up, bellowing: ‘Jungle no finish! Jungle no finish!’ Two riot police officers were forced to seek shelter after being pelted with stones.
