A North Carolina man has been arrested after he assaulted a Kershaw County deputy.
Rico Ross, 32, of Raleigh has been charged with speeding, driving under suspension, open container, failure to stop for a blue light, assault and battery second degree and resisting arrest.
According to deputies, a Kershaw County deputy clocked Ross going 105mph in a 70mph zone on I-20 around 5:45pm Tuesday.
The deputy initiated the stop and smelled an odor of marijuana coming from the car. Ross admitted to having drugs in the car.
Ross is then accused of striking the deputy in the forehead and took off in his car heading towards Richland County.
Richland County deputies joined in the pursuit and Ross bailed at the Shell station on Clemson Road and fled from his car on foot. Ross surrendered at a Bojangles and was arrested without further incident.
“Ross is a documented thug who has served time in prison for armed robbery.” said Sheriff Jim Matthews. The sheriff added that his deputy was courtesy during the stop and was “suckered punch”.
The deputy was treated for a cut he sustained by EMS and Ross is being held at the Kershaw County Detention Center.
