DETROIT –– A 20-year-old Detroit man made an online threat to bomb a church hosting the funeral for slain Detroit Police Capt. Kenneth Steil Friday, police say.
The suspect, Deshawn Lanton, is accused of posting the bomb threat in the comment section of a live stream of the funeral run by WXYZ-TV, Channel 7 News, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said Wednesday.
“A coward, this Deshawn, probably not having much to do, was sitting on his sofa watching the events unfold and decided that he would send out a threat through a social media platform, saying we should — or he should — blow up the church where we were all located,” Craig said. “So that person is in custody.
” … We take threats seriously. We will find you.”
According to U.S. Attorney Barbara L. McQuade’s office, the threat read: “Maybe I should drop a bomb on tha building to get rid of the rest of y’all. [sic]”
