The 2016 presidential election has been unusual in many ways, but never have two more unpopular candidates represented the major parties.

A vast majority of voters find neither candidate trustworthy. In poll after poll, at least two-thirds of voters find Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump to be dishonest and untrustworthy.

Trump’s gaffes have been a byproduct of his off-the-cuff, bombastic campaign style, which has made it possible for him to spend next-to-nothing on advertising, but has created a series of conflicting, often untrue pronouncements.

Hillary Clinton’s public career has spanned more than two decades, providing many opportunities to make mistakes.

During the 2008 campaign for president, Hillary Clinton said that as first lady she landed in Bosnia in March of 1996 under sniper fire and ran with her head down to get to the vehicles that were on hand to transport her.

She later admitted that she misspoke, causing an awkward spell during a hard-fought campaign against then Sen. Barack Obama in 2008. A 1996 video shows her landing and calmly shaking hands with the crowds, even hugging children and posing for photos.

During the 2016 campaign against Sen. Bernie Sanders, Clinton said she didn’t know where the Vermont senator was when she was trying to pass health care legislation as first lady under President Bill Clinton. Videos showing Sanders standing right behind Clinton at a rally, and her thanking Sanders for being present quickly surfaced.

During a CNN town hall in Columbus, Ohio, in March of 2016, the former New York senator said that “we are going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business.” She later called the comment a misstatement. The words have led to her facing a tougher election battle in coal-producing states such as West Virginia.

FBI Director James Comey told lawmakers on Capitol Hill on July 7, 2016, that some of Clinton’s claims about her email use as Secretary of State were not true. Comey made the statements while being questioned by U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-SC, who has been a chief critic of the White House hopeful. The FBI director opted not to bring charges against Clinton for her handling of emails but did say she and her aides were “extremely careless” with classified information.
