A Butler County pastor and high school football announcer is out to set the record straight after his alleged remarks ahead of Friday night’s game exploded on social media.

Allen Joyner, who is the pastor of Sweet Home Baptist Church in McKenzie, continues to be shocked by what he terms as death threats he’s received for remarks he allegedly made just before the start of the McKenzie High School football game against Houston County High School.

Joyner allegedly made this statement over the public address system:

“If you don’t want to stand for the national anthem, you can line up over there by the fence and let our military personnel take a few shots at you since they’re taking shots for you.”

The alleged remark was posted on Facebook by a fan of the visiting team. The fan reportedly complimented Joyner for what he allegedly said.

Joyner says the viral story is nowhere near the truth, and he was misquoted. This is what the pastor claims to have actually said:

“If you don’t want to stand for the national anthem, please go sit at the baseball field and let some of our folks take a shot at reminding you of the price our military paid for your freedom to sit.”
