New York Times Executive Editor Dean Baquet says he’d publish information from Donald Trump’s tax returns even if it means risking jail time, according to a new report.
Laura Poitras, the filmmaker behind the Academy Award-winning documentary on National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, reportedly broached the subject with Baquet during a forum on Sunday.
Poitras told Baquet and Washington Post Associate Editor Bob Woodward that lawyers for newspapers may warn about the possibility of jail time for publishing Trump’s returns, CNN Money reported.
“If the Post or the Times were to get Donald Trump’s tax returns, would you publish them?” she asked during the Harvard University forum. Both newspaper editors said yes, they’d argue with the lawyers to publish the information, according to the report.
Baquet, explaining his reasoning, said Trump’s “whole campaign is built on his success as a businessman, and his wealth” and the tax returns could shed light on that.
“Some things you have to do,” Woodward said in agreeing with Baquet, according to the report.
