Via NBC Sports:

Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall has joined the ranks of players making a statement during the national anthem.

Marshall kneeled during the anthem before tonight’s season opener against the Panthers. He appeared to be the only player on the Broncos’ sideline doing so, and everyone on the Panthers’ sideline appeared to be standing.

During the preseason, 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick refused to stand for the anthem, citing police shootings and racial discrimination. After talking to Nate Boyer, a former Army Ranger who had a brief stay as an NFL long snapper, Kaepernick said he would kneel rather than sit during the anthem going forward. A handful of players around the NFL have said they will join Kaepernick.

So far, Marshall is the first player to decline to stand during the NFL regular season. More will join him on Sunday.
