Pop star Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles, spoke out on Monday in defense of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, Global Grind reported.
“I’d like to know if they are as outraged by all the senseless killing of minorities, all of the racial injustices in America, that people are okay with,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “We turn a blind eye to it and as long as it is not affecting us personally we avoid thinking, discussing, protesting, and doing a thing about it.”
Kaepernick incensed conservatives over the weekend after refusing to stand for the national anthem prior to his team’s pre-season game, arguing that it would be disingenuous to do so in the face of police aggression.
“To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way,” he said. “There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
In her post, Knowles argued that Kaepernick should be supported for his non-violent protest in the name of his beliefs.
“He is saying that it is hard to hear the song that says ‘The land of the Free and the home of the brave,’” she stated. “Because it’s not true!!!!! He is truly being brave.”
