There have been 19 murders over the past 18 days in New Orleans.
WWL-TV crime analyst Jeff Asher says it’s the bloodiest stretch of time in the city since 2010.
“To be having a stretch that is equaling what we had six years ago when murder was much more prevalent is obviously not a positive sign,” Asher said.
NOPD Deputy Chief Paul Noel called it a spike in violent crime, not a long term trend.
“These cases most likely involve individuals that chose to engage in illegal activity,” Noel said. “They chose to make decisions that put them at risk to being victims of violent crime.”
The fact that most of these killings are not random acts, comes as little comfort to people who live in neighborhoods affected by the violence.
Neil Stamps lives just down the street from where a man was shot and killed Wednesday night in the 2600 block of Upperline Street.
“The violence is crazy in New Orleans, and it just needs to be stopped,” Stamps said.
Four overnight and morning murders come on the heels of 25 killings in July.
“That’s the most we’ve had since January of 2012 and going all the way back to 2008, it’s amongst the top 5 most violent months in terms of murders, that New Orleans has had,” Asher said.
According to police, there have been 96 murders so far this year in New Orleans. That’s compared to 114 murders this time last year.
“Right now, New Orleans is on pace for an about an 11 percent rise in shootings compared to last year and a 3 percent drop in murders,” Asher said.
Back on Upperline, Stamps says he’s moving out of town to be closer to his mother.
“I’m actually about to move by her,” Stamps said. “She’s living in a different state. I’m going to feel more safer by her.”
