KABUL—A suicide bomber killed at least 61 people and wounded more than 200 others at a protest in Kabul on Saturday, according to the Afghan health ministry, where thousands had gathered to demonstrate against plans to reroute a new power line.
“All the wounded have been admitted to different hospitals across Kabul,” said Wahidullah Majrooh, the ministry’s spokesman.
Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement carried by its affiliated Amaq new agency, calling it an attack on a “gathering of Shi’ites.”
