Several Maryland Democrats on Friday criticized Donald J. Trump‘s speech to accept the Republican presidential nomination, which noted law-and-order issues in Baltimore and other cities.

During his speech Thursday night, Trump spoke of homicide increases in Baltimore and elsewhere, as well as the recent violence against police officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge during his speech at the Republican National Convention.

Trump cited a 60 percent increase in killings in Baltimore, which the city experienced last year. But homicides are down 7 percent this year, and overall, violent crime is down nationally.

A spokesman for Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake on Friday declined to comment on Trump’s comments, but others, including Baltimore Democratic mayoral nominee Catherine E. Pugh criticized the speech.

Pugh called it “a difficult message to listen to. It was hard to get through the speech period. My hope that our convention is more positive.”

Maryland Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski said she was “very disappointed” in the Republican National Convention, and that “it was cliches, rhetoric and no real content about how they were going to create jobs, create opportunity, and make sure it’s not limited to affluent zip codes.”

“What I hear is a lot of rhetoric,” Mikulski said, “but can you tell me what Trump’s education plan is? How is he going to bring jobs back?”

She said she supports “the goals of having a society where you want to make America great again” but doesn’t see that same focus from Republicans.

“We want less right wing flapping and more specifics about how we can able to do this in a way that is achievable and affordable,” she said on rebuilding infrastructure.
