A Chicago Police officer was shot Thursday evening, fire officials confirmed. 

The shooting occurred at E 18th St and Calumet Parkway shortly after 8 p.m., according to the Chicago Fire Department.The officer was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, authorities said.  

CPD spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi ‏tweeted that the officer was shot in the lower body.

Authorities did not release any further information on the officer's condition or the circumstances leading up to the shooting.

An attacker may also have been shot, a source said.

Officers were believed to have spotted a man in or near Battle of Fort Dearborn Park and approached him because they suspected he was drinking, and when he was asked to show identification, he instead took out a gun and shot the officer, a source said, citing preliminary information.
